III-EXCIMER LASER CORRECTION

The origin of the refractive surgery goes back to the middle of the 20th Century: the colombian ophtalmologist Jose BARRAQUER, who launched the myopic keratomileusis.

This now abandoned technique, consisted in a cut of a corneal strip, which profile was modified after freezing, in order to correct the eye. This corneal strip was reinstalled after the process .

Since then the techniques have performed: from the less used radial keratotomy to the laser technology enjoying a new boom .

Why acting on the cornea ?

The eye is a very complicated organ, in which every element is playing a key role . 2\3 of the eye's dioptric power is due to the cornea. A shorsighted/nearsighted eye is an eye which ocular axis is too long and which cornea is too much rounded . That's why the cornea refractive surgery is the best current surgical way to correct shortsightedness/nearsightedness.

Which effeciency for the surgery ?

The history of surgery has shown that there are many techniques. Some of them are used since more than 20 years and some others are more than evolutive. Anyway the current recession on the refractive surgery presents some really good clinical results.
